Nathan Lovett-Murray is of Yorta Yorta descent and he is very proud of where he comes from. Besides being a former AFL player, Nathan is a loud voice for the culture and has been dedicating his whole life-time to Indigenous youth empowerment. His journey turnaround from being a professional athlete to a community mentor is a very strong, albeit subtle, cultural theme, and still reflects his traits of endurance, self-control, and great pride in his culture.
Moreover, as the main power behind Ngurra Warriors, Nathan combines sport and culture to motivate indigenous youth not only Australia but also the Torres Strait. His intention is based on the firm idea that one real strength is self-awareness, and being aware of one’s roots. Through movement, connection, and culture learning, Nathan helps young people rediscover their identity and acquire the confidence that is beyond the field.
It is worth mentioning that Nathan’s leadership is grounded on the principles of respect for Country and is influenced by the voices of the elders and community leaders. Besides, he keeps liaison with local organisations and schools whereby ensuring every Ngurra Warriors program is of long-term positive impact, one that honours tradition, enhances health, and consolidates community relationships.
At the heart of his work lies a simple but powerful message: When we stand together in culture, we stand stronger as one.
Ngurra Warriors, for me, is something that is beyond sports. It is about healing through culture and movement. When our youth get to experience this connection to Country and community, they find a power that goes with them for their whole life.
— Nathan Lovett-Murray
A proud Yorta Yorta man and former AFL footballer, Nathan Lovett-Murray turns his experience, cultural knowledge, and leadership into a source of empowerment for the new generation. As the ambassador of Ngurra Warriors, he is the leader who sees the bright future of integration, resilience, and identity where the young get to learn from culture and community how to become strong.
All programs originate from the concept of trust and care. The coaches are fully screened, trained, and provided with the support, while parents are always welcome to join and share the journey.
Every session is full of the positive spirit, smiling faces, and team-play, creating a space where learning and movement come naturally.
With the help of culture, connection, and purpose, our young people find their way back to the self-confidence and pride of being who they are.
The community shapes each program through the partnership with local elders and community groups, thus ensuring authenticity, respect, and a deep lasting effect not only in Australia but also in the Torres Strait.
Join the expanding network of regions bringing Ngurra Warriors to life across Australia and the Torres Strait.
Each program is guided by community permission, honouring local culture and celebrating identity with every step.
We’re deeply grateful to our partners who share our vision of strength, pride, and culture united.
Their continued support empowers young Australians to stand tall, stay connected, and thrive within their communities.
