About Us

Empowering the Next Generation of Warriors

Ngurra Warriors is a group of people that came about to assist young people in getting back their identity, to find again their pride in their culture, their strength in their spirit, and their sense of belonging in a community. With the mentoring and leadership of Nathan Lovett-Murray, the program gets the discipline involved in sport, the depth of culture, and the result is a bridge connecting traditional values with the modern way of growth.

Under the umbrella of Sports Health Check Charity, Ngurra Warriors combines structured training, mentorship, and the cultural education through which leadership and resilience are nurtured. The word respect always opens the door to every program: respect for elders, for Country, and for each other, thus making sure that every move is a salute to culture and every lesson at the service of community.

Nathan Lovett-Murray: The Heart Behind Ngurra Warriors

The path of Nathan Lovett-Murray to the present is full of power, goal, and inheritance. He was raised in Heywood on his mother’s Country Gunditjmara (Gournditchmara) and through his father he has a connection to the Wamba Wamba, Dhudhuroa, Baraparapa, Dja Dja Wurrung, Yupagalk, Wergaia, and Yorta Yorta peoples of Victoria, as well as the Wiradjuri of New South Wales. Nathan carries with him a lineage of leaders, protectors, and visionaries.

Once an AFL footballer with the Essendon Football Club, Nathan was recognised for his on-field exploits of skill and spirit, but what really forms his legacy is his work outside the stadium. As a 2011–2012

Emerging Leader, he has been on a single mission to infuse the Indigenous Communities with vitality all over Victoria and Australia through his different initiatives. His leadership is very much down to earth and pragmatic: He is always on ground with his camera, guiding programs that are a source of pride, mentoring young people, and turning sport, music, and cultural education into means of getting power.

Nathan’s dedication is quite notably influenced by his great-grandfather Pastor Sir Douglas Nicholls (JP, MBE, OAM, KCVO, Bapa Mamus), and his grandfather Stewart Murray (JP, OAM), both of whom were acknowledged widely for their leadership, justice, and service. Their footprint carved the way for his view that real warriors should not only be fighters, but also the guards of people and culture. With the help of Ngurra Warriors, Nathan gets to carry on their tradition by facilitating the coming of the next generation with the same type of power, pride, and love of mankind.

“We’ve always had warriors in our culture, not just fighters, but protectors and leaders. Ngurra Warriors helps our youth step into that role again.”
